Our Story: Art, Memory, and a Very Busy Laundry Room

Forty years together. That's the foundation of Art By Studio L. Forty years of shared coffee, shared projects, shared opinions about which rose pattern photographs best, and a shared belief that beautiful things deserve a second life. We are a small partnership based in rural Alberta, where the sky is big and the winters are long and there is plenty of quiet time to sit with something worth making.

She is the visionary. Ms. CEO, sketching possibilities, seeing the pendant inside the broken plate before anyone else can. He is the Executive Secretary Handy, strong back, cheerful attitude, questionable decision-making. Together, somehow, it works beautifully.

The studio is where it all happens. We really should tell you about the studio. It started as a laundry room. Technically it still is a laundry room. A small, dignified corner of it remains committed to that original purpose and we honour that commitment every wash day. But the rest of it has become something else entirely. A proper creative space where china gets cut and ground and shaped and wrapped, where Timeless Teacups are born, where Ms. CEO sketches and Executive Secretary Handy tries to keep up. We call it Studio L. It seems to fit.

The work itself began with family. A houseful of cherished china, a grandmother's treasured set, and a plate with a crack running through it that nobody had the heart to throw away. We saw something in that crack. Not damage. Possibility. We turned that plate into pendants, one for each grandchild, small wearable pieces of a life well lived. Nobody needed to inherit the whole cabinet. They just needed to carry a piece of it. There's a difference between those two things, and understanding it is more or less the whole reason Art By Studio L exists.

We work only with reclaimed vintage china, pieces that have already lived full lives. We find them at estate sales, antique markets, and charity shops, sometimes perfect, sometimes cracked, sometimes half-hidden at the back of a shelf waiting for someone to notice them. We hand-cut each fragment, hand-grind every edge, and wrap each piece carefully in your choice of gold or silver aluminum, with a hand-formed wire bale at the top. No two pendants are ever the same. They can't be. That's the whole point.

Whether you choose a pendant from our collections or bring us something of your own, a piece of your grandmother's china, a cup from a set that matters, a fragment of something you can't quite let go of, we will treat it with the care it deserves. We'll cut it carefully, wrap it well, and send it back to you as something you can wear. A piece of memory, carried forward. A story that doesn't end just because the china cracked.

Our three daughters inspire us daily, grand-kitties and all. They remind us that the moments worth keeping don't announce themselves. They just show up quietly, the way good things usually do.

We're glad you found us.
