Collection: Old English Rose
Old English Rose. The pattern that didn't have a name to start.
Royal Albert produced it from 1939 through approximately 1977, starting in Crown China before the war and moving to bone china after it. Those earliest pieces, the ones with the wide, dramatic sponged-gold trim, carry a Crown China backstamp with no pattern name at all. The name was added later, once the roses had been in enough homes to deserve one.
And the roses deserve it. Bold, full, deep pink and red with rich green foliage. Not subtle. Not soft. The kind of rose that fills a frame completely and never apologises for it. The gold at the rim changed over the decades, heavier before the war and more refined after, but the roses themselves stayed the same across every shape they appeared on. Avon, Hampton, Doris, Malvern. The butterfly handles, those rare figural pieces collectors search for patiently. Some pieces were produced with a black background, where the roses practically illuminate the surface. Through all of it, the pattern held.
We find these pieces now, one at a time, and cut them carefully into pendants. Each one is set in a hypoallergenic aluminum frame, finished in gold or silver, with a hand-formed wire bale at the top. No two are the same.
Nearly forty years of production, and Old English Rose never tried to be anything other than itself. Quietly confident the whole time.
